VALENTIN LOELLMANN

ARRIVING SOMEWHERE, MAYBE

6 - 30 June 2025

David Gill Gallery is proud to announce ‘Arriving Somewhere, Maybe’.

The exhibition presents a collection of unique works, each meticulously handcrafted as an outpouring of Loellmann’s creative consciousness. For this occasion, his vision for his atelier will be transported from his factory in Holland to the heart of St. James’s. A large pool lined with ceramic tiles, constructed from 2,000 kilos of clay, will be built within the gallery. Wall-mounted wooden panels in burnt oak, framed in steel, will mirror the fluidity of undulating water. To realize this ambitious project, Loellmann installed special kilns in his studio. “There is process in this work, but also romance,” says Loellmann. “Why not bring something so unexpected and magical to a busy corner of London? It’s about imagination, inspiration, and surprise. And it conveys the way I work within a context, but with a broad sense of possibilities.”

Alongside the pool, the gallery’s main space will feature a carefully curated selection of pieces, including a bench, sofa, coffee table, and dining table that flow together as a singular sculptural object, highlighting Loellmann’s site-specific works for private spaces. The sofa, perched on blackened steel legs, is upholstered in green velvet, while new works explore further juxtapositions where solid stone and metal converge, examining the dialogue between weight and balance. Low bipartite tables feature fluid-like, coloured resin tops, while other pieces in smoked wood continue the theme of soft, organic lines. “We weld the metal directly onto the wood, allowing it to burn into the grain,” Loellmann explains. “It’s risky, but for me, it’s all about the process, not just aesthetics.” He continues, “I want to bring the beauty and strength of nature indoors.”

“A gallery needs to be challenged by its artists,” adds Francis Sultana, CEO of David Gill Gallery. “We need to embrace the aesthetic, the raison d’être, and the method, and then allow the artist to take it to the limit. As for the pool, it will certainly be quite surreal, but it’s important to showcase ideas as well as objects. It’s going to transform the gallery. Valentin is an artist with a vision, and as a gallery, we must allow our artists freedom because from freedom comes beauty. The key is to remove constraints.”
